Simple Side Roll Up-Do
What you need:
- Hair Brush - Bobby pins - Hair spray - Cheat (Instructions on how to make cheat below) - Comb for parting (steel end best) Hair is best 2nd or 3rd day after a wash but if you have naturally slippery hair, spray it with hairspray all over then brush it out to make more coarse. I have naturally a little coarse hair so i don't need to. |
Making the Cheat.
- Get a toilet paper roll. -Cut it open - Fold it over in a cone shape so you have one big end and a small end. Tape it in place. - Get scissors and cut off the pointy edges around the larger end so its smooth and doesn't catch on your hair. |
Step 1:
Brush your hair and make a side part that is half way across your eye brow. Most vintage styles begin from a side part. Step 2 to 3: On the side with less hair twist it from halfway between your ear and the top of the part and wrap around the base of the hairline - picking more hair and twisting around. Step 4: Where my finger is bobby pin in place the hair so it is tight and should not move. If you can wiggle your head and it stays you have a successfully pinned it. I usually use 3 pins. |
Step 5:
Now that one half is pinned in place smooth out all the hair and pull it over your ear. I find de-tangling the twisted hair gently with your fingers works best. Step 6: Grab your cheat with the large aide facing forward and place it at the bottom of your hair and wrap around. Step 7: Place your thumb inside the (right hand for the side i am doing) for grip and roll up. Use your other hand to tuck in the hair at the thin side so it looks like the twist is continuing all the way round. Step 8: Once you roll your hair up to ear height or just above cup it with your left hand to keep in place. |
Step 9:
While you are still cupping with your left hand get your right hand and with thumb and pointer finger wiggle the cheat so it becomes lose and carefully remover it while rotating back and forth. Steps 10 to 11: Place bobby pins inside the curl first. Use as many as you feel you need again i use 2 up from of the curl and will place another deeper in. Step 12: Once inside is reinforced i feel around the connection of the original twist and the back of the new curl and tuck in anything out of place and bobby pin in place. I will also pin in place middle of the top of the curl where it meets the skull to support the hair. Again you can use as many pins as you feel you need. |
Step 13 to 14:
Now you have the style in place. Grab your hair spray. Always spray inside the curl first as this is the structure of the style and will keep it in place. Then spray all over and use the end of a comb/or your hands to smooth any fly away hairs. If the inside of your curl is a little messy and you want a tidy up - grab your cheat again. Step 15: Carefully reinsert it while the hairspray hasn't set yet to fill the hole and rotate it slowly and gently in the direction of the curl (clockwise for the side I have done) then carefully remove. |
Then you are done!
It may sound more complicated that it is and the hardest part is wrapping up around the cheat for the main curve but once you get the hang of it your can do this super quick and look like you spent a lot more time on it! |
